I hate compressing CSS files as they become totally unreadable for editing. I end up keeping 2 versions, compressed and uncompressed, etc.. But how about compressing all your CSS files into one file, ‘on-the-fly’. Now that has solved the problem.

<?php

header('Content-type: text/css');

ob_start("compress");

function compress($buffer) {
  /* remove comments */
  $buffer = preg_replace('!/\*[^*]*\*+([^/][^*]*\*+)*/!', '', $buffer);
  /* remove tabs, spaces, newlines, etc. */
  $buffer = str_replace(array("\r\n", "\r", "\n", "\t", '  ', '    ', '    '), '', $buffer);
  return $buffer;
}

/* your css files */
include('master.css');
include('typography.css');
include('grid.css');
include('print.css');
include('handheld.css');

ob_end_flush();

?>

Use it like this :

<link rel="stylesheet" href="style.php" type="text/css" media="all">
